Greenville & the Upstate · Backyard flock planning

A better start for your backyard flock.

Useful places to learn, source chicks, and compare equipment—plus the property questions to answer before your flock comes home.

Before the chicks arrive

Plan the property, then the flock.

A city backyard flock needs more than a cute henhouse. These are the decisions we work through when planning a custom Greenville coop and secured run.

  1. Confirm the rules for your actual address.

Check city boundaries, county zoning, permits, setbacks, and any HOA or private covenants. A Greenville mailing address alone does not tell you which rules apply. Start with our local chicken-law guide, then confirm requirements with your jurisdiction.

  2. Choose a flock you can comfortably manage.

Think about the permitted flock size, your daily routine, neighbors, and how much secured space your property can support. Read breed descriptions and decide whether egg production, temperament, or variety matters most to you.

  3. Set up chick care and permanent housing.

Before ordering, read the hatchery’s care and shipping instructions, plan the brooder, and decide when the permanent coop and run will be ready. Check sexing policies, order minimums, and delivery dates directly with the seller.

  4. Walk the site after rain and in the afternoon.

Notice runoff, muddy areas, summer sun, and access from the house. Make cleaning, collecting eggs, refilling water, and bringing in feed practical. Shade, drainage, and ventilation should be part of the layout.

  5. Treat protection as a complete enclosure.

Review doors, vents, seams, roof transitions, and ground edges together. Snake-resistant construction depends on small-opening mesh and tightly closed gaps—not a sign or a repellent. Plan a secured run, inspect closures regularly, and decide how any outdoor forage area will be supervised. See our protection approach.

  6. Decide what to build yourself and where to get help.

Compare a shipped coop with a custom build around your yard, cleaning routine, and enclosure needs. Our inquiry form offers budget ranges starting at $2,500–$5,000 and an option for help defining the scope. Tell us about your project.
